Firestone Country Club
If you’re not already familiar with this golf venue, it was founded by the late Harvey Firestone in the 1920’s. Firestone South, located at 452 E. Warner Rd. in Akron, is the only golf course in the world to have hosted three television events in a single calendar year. The American Golf Classic, the CBS Golf Classic and the World Series of Golf all played there.
The Fairways run long and straight and often are parallel to one another. Holes are long, too, making them arduous for handicap golfers. That’s why for all but one year (2002) the course has been home to World Golf Championship matches. In fact, the course is a favorite of Tiger Woods, who has won the cup seven times since 1999.
Firestone has three courses: South, North and West. Tom Fazio designed the West course while Robert Trent Jones gave the North and South updates in the 1960s. The private club also offers overnight accommodations, a fitness gym, four dining areas and services for guests requiring corporate services during their visit.
One recent guest claims “the greens are some of the fastest I’ve played all year and they are in great condition!” Apparently the dining earns similar accolades. Among members, their signature Crunch Cream Pie is the bomb. Menu items include a healthy range of steak cuts, seafood and tempting sides like black truffle whipped potato.
